Discussion Title: Is carpooling the way of the future?

1. Carpooling is the way of the future.
1.1. Con: Carpooling isn't flexible enough for cities.
1.1.1. Pro: Waiting for or coordinating with others isn't as flexible as having car sharing options, like [Drive Now](https://www.drive-now.com).
1.2. Pro: It is better for the environment.
1.2.1. Con: Carpooling accomplishes nothing that couldn't be solved by increased access to public transportation.
1.2.1.1. Pro: If public transportation became affordable to everybody, it would be a much greener choice.
1.2.1.1.1. Con: Public transport is likely to always be expensive, especially if it is the sole way to travel around.
1.2.1.2. Con: Public transport often adversely affects those in difficult or out-of-the-way locations.
1.2.2. Pro: Carpooling lanes incentivise maximising the amount of people per vehicle.
1.3. Con: -> See 1.2.1.
1.4. Pro: Carpooling apps like Uber Pool and Lyft Pool are making carpooling opportunities far more accessible.
1.4.1. Pro: In the same way Ubers have revolutionised taxi systems, such apps are likely to cause a similar uptick in social acceptance and popularity of carpooling.
1.4.2. Con: Unless you know someone who lives close to your destination, it is hard to pair routes.
1.4.2.1. Con: Car pools run by an organisation that pairs strangers together can eliminate this problem; it then becomes more about pairing individuals by route rather than by knowing one another beforehand.
1.4.2.2. Pro: It can mean carpooling with strangers, which is often not ideal.
1.4.2.2.1. Pro: Carpooling with strangers may feel like a breach of privacy, especially depending on their conduct.
1.5. Con: Safety has to be considered, as split journeys with multiple people \(often strangers\) may not be safe.
1.5.1. Pro: If all vehicles have considerably higher numbers of occupants, car accidents will have correspondingly higher degrees of injury and fatality.
1.5.2. Pro: Some people prefer to have more isolated commutes where there is no communication with others.
1.5.2.1. Pro: In car pools, more than other transport, people may feel inclined to chat. Not everybody appreciates this.
1.5.2.2. Con: Others prefer to make new friends. This is the decision of each individual. Both sides are understandable.
1.5.3. Con: Taxis are similar in this regard, but safety is guaranteed \(to a certain extent\) through regulations, etc.
1.6. Pro: Carpooling allows strangers to get to know each other, helping build good relationships.
1.7. Pro: Carpooling is convenient for people.
1.7.1. Pro: It is better economically for all parties.
1.7.1.1. Pro: Rather than the costs from all the different vehicles - MOT, tax, maintenance, fuel - users only need to concern themselves with one, which is substantially cheaper.
1.7.2. Con: We're already time poor and so people don't have time to spare going to unnecessary drop-off points.
1.7.2.1. Con: Routes can be optimized by applying certain algorithms. Distances and times will be minimized in this way. For interested people and/or Supply Chain students: [Wiki](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_routing_problem)
1.7.2.2. Con: For the sake of the future, we may need to reprioritise our time to allow for carpooling.
1.7.3. Con: -> See 1.4.2.
1.7.4. Pro: [Driving can be stressful](https://www.confused.com/on-the-road/safety/how-to-avoid-driving-stress#:~:text=Driving%20at%20peak%20times%20and) for some people. If you're carpooling with someone else and the other person is driving, you don't have to go through that stress.
1.7.5. Pro: Carpooling can save parents a lot of time by splitting the responsibility of taking children to school.
1.7.5.1. Pro: Not only parents, but many people who have difficulty organising their lives would benefit from car pooling.
1.7.5.2. Con: Parents already manage with whatever systems they deem necessary, there is no need for carpooling to allow for this.
1.7.5.3. Con: Children may not be friends with other children they're being asked to carpool with, which could cause friction.
